This recipe was my gateway smoothie.
I never thought I would like “green smoothies” because I was raised to believe that anything green was too healthy to taste good at the same time. But when I did a green smoothie challenge from Simple Green Smoothies that included this recipe for Dan’s Famous Apple Pie Smoothie, the recipe converted me for good.
Turns out, green can taste great. (Sometimes the fruit colors can overpower the greens in your smoothie to give it a deep purple color, but what makes a smoothie “green” is using a veggie like spinach or kale as the base).
On that note: I don’t actually think this smoothie comes out bright green in color.

From here, I ventured into trying other smoothie recipes and incorporated them into my meal plans. We use this Ninja single-serve blender.
- 2 cups fresh spinach
- 1 1⁄2 cups almond milk, unsweetened
- 3 apples, core removed
- 4 medjool dates, pitted
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- ice, if desired
- Blend spinach and almond milk together first.
- Add apples and blend again.
- Add remaining ingredients and blend again.
