As a first-time mom + long-time health science researcher, I dove deep into reading everything related to natural birth. Here are my recommendations for reading (and re-reading):
I ran out to buy What to Expect When You’re Expecting and nearly all of its sequels as soon as I learned I was pregnant. I thought that was what I was supposed to do.
Turns out, reading that initial book only confirmed what my gut already knew: for something so natural, everything sounded overwhelmingly complicated + fear-focused.
And so began my natural birth pursuit, which ultimately led to an unmedicated home birth. It was the greatest experience of my life! (More on that in another post).
Here are the natural birth books that I recommend most:
- HypnoBirthing by Marie Mongan
- Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin
- Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin
I took my local HypnoBirthing class + highly recommend going to the in-person version if you can find one. It’s a great way to meet parents in the same stage of parenthood as you + those friendships become increasingly important in the postpartum year.
When I took that HypnoBirthing class in Kansas City, I had my baby + then my husband accepted a job promotion back to Boston. I wished there had been a more interactive digital component to making parent friends + learning about first-time parenting, so that I could’ve continued from wherever life took us.
This is where my course line was born. (Hah, see what I did there?)
The courses build on one another, but you can take them individually and do great either way:
- Your Organic Preconception
- Your Organic Pregnancy
- Your Organic Birth
- Your Organic Postpartum
Hands-down, I love the In His Hands company for anything natural birth related. They carry everything you could possibly need, have impeccable customer service + quality goods you can trust.
If you’re having a home birth, you will likely need a birth kit. You can customize an order, or purchase pre-bundled kits. I added the Mama Koala Postpartum Care Package to my birth kit order + every single item was wonderful (I just thankfully didn’t need to end up using the inflatable seat ring).
If you get nothing else, get the AfterEase tincture and the Fridet. Trust me!
What other natural birth resources have you loved? What else are you looking for?
