The new patient paperwork in my chiropractors office innocently asked my “occupation”.
I used to always note “Full-Time Premedicine Student” or “Nonprofit Director” or “CEO” so proudly.
Now, for the first time being asked since having my daughter + choosing to stay home with her, I was stumped on what to write.
So, I’m opening it up — what do YOU write on the occupation line?
Here’s an ongoing list of what I’ve been sorting through:
Stay at Home Mom
Well, it’s not wrong, but it’s not right, either. I’m actually very rarely home.
This implies 40-hours of work + I’m definitely clocking more than that. Every mom is.
This also implies that moms working outside of the home are “part-time moms”. Yikes!
All moms are paid in the cute stuff. And the not so cute stuff. But not money.
Same thing — Just because I’m not bringing in a paycheck by watching my daughter specifically doesn’t mean I’m not “working” or contributing a financial value to my household.
We do own our own businesses that bring in paychecks, but only listing “Entrepreneur” leaves no mention of my most important work as a mom.
Moms that don’t own businesses still impact their household’s bottom line financially, too.
Retired or “on Sabbatical”
Feels old! I’m 30, not 65… And it’s temporary. And without social security checks. When I think of “retired” I think of feet up on a dock fishing somewhere (not that I even fish?!) but I definitely haven’t put my feet up often the last 2 years…
Work Inside the Home
I’ve had a practitioner ask if I work inside the home or outside the home + it felt *better* but still not *right*…
I work inside the home now, and I worked inside the home before baby, too. The perk of entrepreneurship!
Crafty, but feels like a stretch for me. My homemaking methods are by no means meticulously calculated for perfection.
When I hear this one, I think of my mom’s tax return filings because this is what she always put.
Not a bad option, but not sure I’m sold on it…
What about MOM?
Not *I’m just a mom* but “I’m a mom”.
I love being a mom, but I don’t want to discount the other business babies I’m passionate about, either.
Organic Mommy CEO
I’ve decided to start labeling Organic Mommy CEO.
Because it’s true. I’m literally running the business of a healthy family home + happen to own businesses that support us financially.
I never started this community to think we’d be labeling it on the occupation lines, but it fits, don’t you think?
What do you write on the “occupation” line?
I’m so curious to hear what other moms describe their “jobs” as.
What ones have you ruled out and why? Which titles are contenders for your “occupation”? Will you write Organic Mommy CEO on your next form?
